Building up a NAS

Ja, new photos are missing here. The reason is that I am currently trying to de-cloud my data.

I am currently in the process of migrating most of my data including photos towards “on-premise”. The current idea is to build up a small homelab consisting of these components:

  • a custom-built Network Attached Storage (NAS)

    • running on a Raspberry Pi 5 with 4GB of RAM

    • OS itself running with on-board NVMe SSD using PCIe

    • attached to it just a bunch of disks (JBOD) for data, currently starting with a 2 TB NVMe in an USB 3enclosure

    • moderating software stack is OpenMediaVault

    • backups into the cloud (Germany) using Borgbackup

  • another “app” server that utilises the data on the NAS (besides my computers)

    • running on a Raspberry Pi 5 with 8GB of RAM (still on SD card during prototyping)

    • container based (currently switching between Docker and Podman back and forth

    • running Immich etc.

All the stuff is set up using Ansible as far as I come. For monitoring, I am currently checking out Netdata - which looks very promising!

More on that in the future - and yess, new photos are on their way!

Here, just a quick photo of the working prototype:
